Activities Not Permitted under the Student Residence Status (Part-Time Work Permit) The “student” residence status is granted to those who reside in Japan in order to study. Accordingly, in order to work part-time, students must apply for and obtain permission to engage in activity other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted. If you did not apply for it at the airport when newly entering Japan, please apply at the Regional Immigration Services Brueau. Working hours are limited to a maximum of 28 hours per week under this permit (regardless of student status such as regular, exchange or non-degree/research), except during summer, winter, and spring holidays, when up to 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week is permitted. It should be noted that this permission is not automatically renewed in case of your extension of period of stay. If you still need permission after the extension, you will need to reapply for it at the time of application for extension of period of stay.[Rules Regarding the part-time work permit]1. It is strictly prohibited by law and regulations to work in the sex industry or any kind of adult entertainment. This includes work such as washing dishes or cleaning in such settings.
