The dates of exams and result announcements vary for the quarter-based courses and concentration programs. Please check with your affiliated school office. Usually, for the master’s degree, students must complete two years or more of full-time postgraduate study, earn the required number of credits for the classes they are required to take by their graduate school, receive necessary research supervision, write a thesis, and pass their thesis defense and final examinations. Students must register for classes at the graduate school office during the designated period. Classes must be selected after consultation with the academic supervisor. Usually, for the doctorate degree, students must complete three years or more of full-time postgraduate study in a Ph.D. program. Students must earn the required number of credits for the classes they are required to take by their graduate school, receive necessary research supervision, write a thesis, and pass the doctoral dissertation screening and final examinations. The doctoral program is composed of supervision by a professor and the student’s own research activities (Some graduate schools may require course work). Thus, students must receive designated research guidance. One class period is 100 minutes; this is called ‘hitokoma’ in Japanese.
