Using one of the former library buildings, the Aizu museum opened in 1998. The building was designed by the architect Kenji Imai, and was completed in 1925. It is the second oldest building that still exists on campus at Waseda University. Dr. Yaichi Aizu is a prominent figure in Japanese modern culture as an Eastern Art History researcher, poet, and calligrapher. His collection is vast, including antique materials from China, Korea, and Japan. In addition to his collection, the museum possesses many archaeological and ethnic materials focusing on the Ainu. There are also Oriental Ceramics and Zen calligraphy collected by the former Tomioka art museum. The museum houses an extensive collection of valuable modern and contemporary art in Japan including“Meian”(“Light and Shadow”) a collaboration with Taikan Yokoyama and Kanzan Shimomura, “Roma-shisetsu”(“Mission to Rome”) by Seison Maeda, and“Shukongoshinzou”(“Sculpture of Vajrapani”) which was exhibited at the Chicago Exposition in 1893. The Waseda University History Museum conducts research activities to clarify the history of Waseda University and the achievements of its founder, Shigenobu Okuma, and the people who contributed to the university, and to pass them on to future generations. The museum exhibits not only on Waseda University’s history, but also on current and future education and research, disseminating the individuality and significance of the university since its founding. There are facilities such as a reference room on the Higashifushimi Campus, and an exhibition facility on the Waseda Campus.11▍
